Many of the 18th century buttons made of natural materials did not have pierced holes, but were stitched onto a garment through a pin shank. A metal shank runs from the center top of the button, through the button, and then is formed into a loop for sewing the button to the garment.

We have recently obtained these buttons in 3/4" size, in white or a smoky grey, iridescent shell material. We also have a limited number available in 1/2" size, which would be a wonderful accent for a boy's waistcoat.
The plain pin shank buttons sell for $1.75 each in 3/4" and $1.50 each in 1/2".

This is as close as you can get to the etched buttons available in the late 1700s. Enough for a waistcoat or compere stomacher.
